The Rise and Fall of Alexander Daigle: From Hockey Superstar to Forgotten First Pick

He was given the status of a hockey superstar. The scouts of the National Hockey League (NHL) called him the next Wayne Gretzky. Alexander Daigle himself did not expect less from himself either. However, despite his tremendous talent, Hollywood movie star looks and charm, the first pick in the 1993 NHL draft could not live up to the comparison given to him – Alexander the Great.

In order to tempt Ottawa to trade draft rights for Daigle, the Quebec Nordiques even expressed a willingness to part with their stars Owen Nolan, Peter Forsberg and Ron Hextall, but the Senators held firm. Daigle was also aware of his skill and talent level. It may have prompted a line that would haunt him for the rest of his life: “I’m glad I was drafted first – because nobody ever remembers who was second…”
