The Port of Houston moved nearly 3.5 million TEUs through November 2023. Although this represents a 5% decrease compared to the previous year’s record volumes, full containers shipped remained strong over the course of 2023, recording a 9% increase compared to the same period in 2022.

Shipment demand was driven primarily by petrochemical resins and raw materials produced in the region. However, full container imports were down 16% in November and 8% so far this year.

Despite these challenges, the Port of Houston remains a hub of activity. The Bayport container terminal recently welcomed the “CMA CGM Lisa Marie”, one of its largest vessels to date with a capacity of close to 11,000 TEU.

At other Port of Houston facilities, general cargo saw a 20% reduction this year, attributed to declines in sectors such as coal, grain and plywood. However, car import units continue to rise, with 67% growth so far this year compared to the same period in 2022.

Port CEO Roger Guenther expressed optimism about the future, highlighting ongoing efforts to expand the Houston Ship Channel and add dock and yard capacity at container terminals. These developments ensure that the Port of Houston is well equipped to continue driving growth throughout the region.
