The Incredible Long Matches and Unfortunate Final Losses of Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open

The final against the Italian Jannik Sinner, which he lost after a 2-0 set lead, was the fourth five-set match during the tournament for Daniil Medvedev.

In all seven games, the Russian played a total of 24 hours and 17 minutes.

Never before had a player been on the court for more than a day at a tournament. The previous record holder was Carlos Alcaraz with 23 hours and 40 minutes at the US Open 2022.

After the final, Medvedev expressed his amusement at the strange statistics: “At least I have a record in something. I’m in the history books because of something. I’ll take that with me!”

Medvedev also equaled an old record set by Pete Sampras from 1995 at the Australian Open: He reached the final after twice turning a 0-2 deficit into a win.

Medvedev loses two finals after a 2-0 lead

He now claims another Australian Open record for himself: He is the first player to lose twice in the final after a 2-0 set lead. The mishap happened to him against Rafael Nadal in 2022 (6:2, 7:6, 4:6, 4:6, 5:7).

After 2021 and 2022, the 27-year-old lost the final in Melbourne for the third time. At least in this category he doesn’t yet come close to the record holder Andy Murray (5 final defeats).
