Former Dutch international Marc Overmars has to leave his position as sporting director in Antwerp. The reason is a one-year sentence for sexual harassment.
The football ban was originally only valid for the Netherlands, but FIFA recently extended its scope to the entire world. This was reported by the Reuters agency.
The 50-year-old Overmars was punished last November for sending messages and photos of a sexual nature to female colleagues during his time in charge of Ajax Amsterdam. Already in January 2022, he resigned because of this, but a month later he was hired by Antwerp.
The punishment for the ex-Ajax, Arsenal or Barcelona midfielder originally applied only to the Netherlands, but FIFA recently extended its validity to the whole world at the request of the Dutch association. Overmars, who has a contract in Antwerp until 2026, can appeal against this.
