Tennis stars Zverev and Kerber eyeing Olympic mixed doubles in Paris

The dream of Olympic gold is alive!

Under the Australian sun, tennis star Alexander Zverev (26) announced what German tennis fans want. He and Angelique Kerber (35) want to compete in the mixed doubles at the Olympics in Paris in July.

Zverev before the start of the Australian Open in Melbourne: “We have spoken and the plan is that we want to play together. Of course we have to see how Angie does by then, you also have to have the ranking to be able to take part in the Olympics. If we can, we will play.”

Zverev, number 6 in the world, is certainly there, Kerber has to climb from her current position of 657th to be allowed to go to France. But that will be very difficult, at least in Melbourne. In the first round, the former number 1 will face the American Danielle Collins (30/No. 54). After that, world number one Iga Swiatek (22/Poland) would wait.

The warm-up would be difficult for Zverev and Kerber as well as for everyone else, because the two German figureheads will no longer be on the pitch together before the Olympics. Zverev joked: “We could organize a mixed tournament, but Novak or Iga probably won’t come.”

And during their singles tournaments, which are rarely in the same place at the same time, it would not be good for their “main job” to also play mixed. “That would be counterproductive,” said the Olympic champion.

Novak or Iga, that is Novak Djokovic (36) and Iga Swiatek (22), who are currently leading the world rankings. They also played in the United Cup. Swiatek lost in the final with Poland against Germany.

And so it probably remains with the two matches, both of which were played in the United Cup. They won one, they lost one. For Kerber, the days in Sydney were the first competition after a year and a half of baby break.

Zverev then played the quarterfinals, semifinals and final in the mixed doubles alongside Laura Siegemund (35). Both harmonized perfectly and won all three games. Including the one in the final against Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz (26), which brought the DTB team victory.
