Taranto Municipality Announces New Sports Facility and Inclusive Playgrounds for 2026 Mediterranean Games

Below is a press release released by the Municipality of Taranto:

As part of the investments planned in view of the XX Edition of the Mediterranean Games 2026 and aimed at the redevelopment of some urban areas, also through environmentalisation interventions, there is an important provision adopted by the Administration led by Mayor Rinaldo Melucci.

Following a specific resolution, the municipal council, on the proposal of the mayor who has responsibility for urban planning, major works and Mediterranean games, laid the foundations for the construction of a multipurpose outdoor facility suitable for playing rugby matches, Baseball and American Football. The structure will be built in the “Paolo VI” district, in the area between Corso Bruno Buozzi and Via Alcide De Gasperi, a choice inspired not only by assessments relating to the urban destination of the lot, compliant with the project forecasts, but also to be in line with the achievement of the social inclusion objectives set by the Department for Sport of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

Leveraging the funding allocated by the PNRR and with a view to the recovery of urban areas precisely through the creation and adaptation of sports infrastructures, the municipal administration has definitively identified for the multipurpose facility an area bordering a plot of land, located in the corner between via del Lavoro and viale del Turismo, where the construction of the “Paolo VI neighborhood gym” is planned for the 2026 Mediterranean Games.

Initially planned in another city district, which later turned out to be incompatible with the implementation times of the construction, the work will have a total financed cost of €3,500,000.00 and should be completed by March 2026.

“With the definitive identification of the area for this new structure – declared Mayor Melucci – we are decisively continuing to strengthen sports and leisure services by equipping our urban area with a facility which, available to anyone, will contribute to achieve the objectives of social inclusion.”

Mariella Albanese, the lawyer. Giuseppe Cervellera and the Manager Alessandro De Roma.

In the last two years, the municipal administration led by Mayor Melucci has created 18 inclusive playgrounds for children in various public places in the city.

In 2023 alone we built 11 structures, investing around €168,000.

It should be underlined that this provision also includes a maintenance service which will make any repairs more immediate.

As per the administrative program, this demonstrates the constant commitment aimed at creating inclusive public spaces for children, which will simultaneously allow the redevelopment of public areas.

These initiatives have had and will have a significant social impact, providing a service to the numerous Taranto families.

This initiative reflects our deep dedication to providing leisure opportunities accessible to all, regardless of ability.

The new inclusive playgrounds are carefully designed, suited to the needs of each child, ensuring a welcoming and stimulating environment. Each park is equipped with specially designed equipment and facilities to encourage collaborative play and participation by children of all abilities.

This project not only enriches the quality of life of our young citizens, but is a testament to our tangible commitment to ensuring that no child is excluded from opportunities for fun and development.

Councilor Liuzzi comments: “We are proud to announce these results, a significant step forward towards a more equitable and welcoming community. Accessibility is key, and these new spaces reflect our commitment to building a city that welcomes and celebrates childhood and diversity.”
