Ex-Liverpool star Stephen Darby is suffering from a rare illness

Darby made a name for himself as a full-back. Trained with the Reds, he moved to Swindon Town, Notts County and AFC Rochdale during three loan spells. It wasn’t until his transfer to Bradford City in 2012 that he found his sporting home. After five years he moved to traditional club Bolton Wanderers before he tragically had to end his career prematurely on September 18, 2018 at the age of just 29. Bitter diagnosis: motor neuron disease.

The disease causes motor neurons in the spinal cord and brain to degenerate. The result: muscle weakness, restricted movement and speech, breathing and swallowing disorders. One of the best-known forms in Germany is ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). According to the current status, there are around 6,000 to 8,000 cases.

The ex-professional is now dependent on a wheelchair. In a TV shoot for “BBC Breakfast” with Marcus Stewart (51/ Bristol Rovers, Huddersfield, Sunderland, among others), who also suffers from MND, he spoke about his illness at Anfield Road.

Darby’s voice: weak and slow. He always has to take longer breaks. Despite everything, he spreads a positive atmosphere. Darby: “MND brings together many different types of people. We are united by the fight for the cure and treatment of the disease.”

To enable medical advances, Darby co-founded the in 2022 with Chris Rimmer (a former soldier who died of the disease). „The Darby Rimmer Foundation“. In less than two years, the foundation has collected over 1.5 million euros.
