Spanish Badminton Players Shine in Intense Matches at European Championships

The morning session started with the mixed doubles of Rubén García and Lucía Rodríguez. A match in which the Spaniards had no great difficulties in overcoming the Nordic couple formed by Jonas Kudsk and Ditte Søby. A score of 21-10 and 21-14 for the Spanish signed their pass for the penultimate round of the draw.

After them, Pablo Abián faced Joran Kweenkel (Netherlands). This rival seemed like he could make things very difficult for Calatayud. However, Pablo, demonstrating great solidity in his game and intelligence, managed to resolve the first game with a result of 21-11. It would be the second round that would put the Spaniard in more trouble. But despite raising the level, the Dutchman could not match the forcefulness of the national team, who also took the second set 21-18.

In the men’s doubles, Rubén García and Carlos Piris faced off against the Danish duo Kryger Boe – Kjær. The Nordics did not let the Spaniards breathe, who could not do much against their rivals, remaining in a creditable quarterfinal round with a result of 9-21 and 14-21.

The afternoon session began at 4:00 p.m. with Rubén and Lucía competing in the mixed semifinal on court one. In front of them, the Danish couple formed by Jeppe Søby and Kathrine Vang. Badminton fans present at the IFU Arena were able to enjoy a beautiful and tight match, in which both pairs demonstrated a very high level. It was the small details, and the occasional stroke of luck, that ended up deciding the result in favor of the Danes by 22-20 and 26-24.
And finally it was Pablo’s turn, who played for his place in the final against Viren Nettasinghe (Sri Lanka). After a relatively simple first game that Pabló won with confidence, the Asian went up a gear in the second half, forcing them to reach the final game. A lot of emotion in this third round with very close scores, which, finally and after 52 minutes of fighting, fell to the Spanish side with an aggregate result of 21-14, 17-21 and 21-17 for Pablo Abián.

We will have to wait until Sunday to find out if Pablo finally reaches the top of the podium.
