Sotillo del Rincón Dances: A Look Back in Time at Mercado Cinemas

SEE PHOTOS OF ALL THE TOWNS OF SORIA

Room 2 of the Mercado Cinemas was almost full yesterday to see the documentary that Spanish Television recorded in 1975 (approx.) about the dances of Sotillo del Rincón. It is the second time it has been screened in public. The first was approximately a decade ago in the town of Valle del Razón itself.

The screening was part of the UNED Cine-Club. One of its managers, Julián de la Llana, explained at the beginning of the event that, when these scrolls were found, they appeared without any credit, so not much more information is known than what can be seen in the images, not even if it was broadcast on television.

As De la Llana said, that is secondary. The important thing is what the images show and how they show it. Furthermore, yesterday at the Mercado Cinemas there were couples, siblings, children, friends… of the people who danced that day half a century ago. Four of those people have already died, which helped create emotional moments in the room yesterday.

The dances are presented one by one by the then mayor, José María Gómez Zardoya. Afterwards, everyone starts talking, starting with the slob Valentín de Torre. The palillero is Pedro José Escolar. The musicians, Fernando Calonge and Francisco Munilla. The spoken interventions are as brief as they are priceless.

The eight who dance are Antonio Escolar, Ernesto Ruiz, Daniel Casas, Jesús Gómez, José Antonio García, Luis de la Peña, Luis de Miguel and Ángel Hernández. The latter, as soon as yesterday’s screening ended, stood up to thank the spectators for their presence and to remember the figures of those four absent people. Of the people who appear in the documentary, she was the only one who was at the Mercado Cinemas.

The Sotillo del Rincón dances were performed for the last time in 1992. Hopefully yesterday’s screening will help their recovery this summer.

Once this short documentary was finished, the chapter corresponding to Soria of the legendary program from the 80s-90s, ‘A Vista de Ave’, was broadcast. The chapter is titled ‘The teachers, the pastors and the poets’. Although it can surely be seen through digital platforms or on DVD, the magic of the big screen always increases the beauty when it exists.
