Ski jumping: ÖSV eagles are in wait

All six ÖSV Adler qualified for the main competition. Clemens Aigner finished 18th ahead of Daniel Tschofenig. Jan Hörl (33rd) also easily made it into the field of 50. The qualification took place in front of 8,000 fans, and on Monday there will be more than 20,000.

On New Year’s Day, Kraft will face the Finnish Antti Aalto in a knockout duel, Manuel Fettner will face Luca Roth from Germany and Michael Hayböck will duel with the Italian Francesco Cecon. There will definitely be a red-white-red knockout winner, because Jan Hörl will compete with Clemens Aigner. Daniel Tschofenig meets Tate Frantz (USA).

Lanisek wins Garmisch qualification

The Slovenian came out on top just ahead of Oberstdorf winner Andreas Wellinger.

Fettner is happy about a “really good” New Year’s Eve

Wellinger was seven meters short of strength in his jump, but he botched the landing. “I think maybe the last bit is missing, the track is still stressing me out. It wasn’t a great jump, but it was good. I’m happy,” said tour favorite Kraft, who came third in the opening competition. “If everything fits together, a podium is certainly possible. I put everything in the top ten.” In the evening, therapy, good food and playing cards are on the agenda.

Fettner was happy with New Year’s Eve. “Very cool, it was a really good day. Six good jumps in a row – that’s starting to get scary for me. Perfect end to this year. I want to continue like this.”

Fettner best Austrian in qualification

The 38-year-old finished third in qualifying.

Michael Hayböck also took stock of the qualification with satisfaction: “It can continue like this, the jump is starting to suit me. It was an improvement on training, the start number is great. I want to start the new year as well as it ended today.” Clemens Aigner came 18th immediately ahead of Daniel Tschofenig and will face his roommate Jan Hörl (33rd), who botched his jump, in the knockout duel. “There were a lot of things that weren’t right. The jump and wind weren’t good, but tomorrow is a new day and a new year,” said the eighth overall.

Extra unit due to lift failure

Before the qualification jump, the athletes had to do an extra session. Since the lift to the diving tower was broken, we had to climb the stairs. The equipment was voluntarily shouldered by children on the more than 300 steps. “A bag and the skis, that was very good,” said Kraft and laughed. Wellinger also thanked the young people: “The walk was rather uncool. I had to take a breather and was pretty blue.”

ORF Because the lift failed, the athletes had to climb 300 steps

The climb to the Bakken was also good therapy for Kraft’s ailing back. “I made sure to lift my buttocks up nicely, which is good for the back. There was a bit of a pinch in the morning, but after warming up and jumping it worked quite well. We’ll deal with that and then slide over well,” said the overall World Cup leader.

Strength combats “Garmisch Curse”

On New Year’s Day, Kraft will try to finally break his “Garmisch curse”. Most recently, the Pongauer had to bury his tour hopes six times in a row at the second of four stops. With places 31, 49, 13, 28, a qualifying exit and 18th place in the previous season, Kraft has fallen sharply in the recent past.
