Sherrone Moore Promoted to Head Coach of Michigan Wolverines

College champion Wolverines announced offensive coordinator promoted to head coach

The Michigan Wolverines hired Sherrone Moore this week to replace head coach Jim Harbaugh, giving the 37-year-old offensive coordinator the opportunity to lead the most decorated institution in college football.

The University of Michigan announced the appointment a couple of days after Jim Harbaugh left to coach the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers on a five-year contract that gives him another shot at a Super Bowl title.

“I want to thank Coach Jim Harbaugh for the trust he has shown me over the past six years and for supporting my growth as a football coach during this time,” Sherrone Moore said in a statement.

Sherrone Moore went 4-0, including wins over Ohio State and Penn State, when she took over for Jim Harbaugh, who had to serve a pair of suspensions for potential violations of NCAA rules during the 2023 season.

He will be the first African-American head coach in the history of the Michigan football team.

“You have to take a look at what a shining star he is,” Jim Harbaugh said last month, before defeating Washington in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. “He’s just phenomenal, very smart. He works very hard.”

Michigan’s offensive line was among the best in the country under Sherrone Moore. This helped restore glory to this college football powerhouse, with a national title and three consecutive Big Ten conference championships.

Editorial Selections

Keeping Sherrone Moore would help give the Wolverines some continuity in the post-Jim Harbaugh era. Many of the outgoing coach’s assistants will remain on staff, and the team could avoid transferring several key players.
