Sebastián Mora, fifth in the European track cycling scratch

MADRID, 12 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish cyclist Sebastián Mora finished fifth this Friday in the men’s scratch event at the European Track Championship, which is being held in Apeldoorn (Netherlands), while his compatriots Alejandro Martínez reached the round of 16 in the individual speed and Eukene Larrarte was fourteenth in the omnium.

From the first stages of the 60 laps of the velodrome, Mora became the protagonist, attacking and continuing the proposals of other rivals. In the middle of the race, a movement to turn around came to fruition and which contained, in addition to Mora, nine other cyclists; among them, some of the stature of the Portuguese Iúri Leitão, the British Ethan Vernon, the Danish Tobias Hansen and the Austrian Tim Wafler.

The decisive attack came with eight laps to go. Leitão, current omnium world champion, took advantage of a slight break to make a brutal change of pace, which quickly gave him an already insurmountable distance for his rivals for the gold. Behind them, the fight focused on the silver medal, which ended up being played in the sprint between Vernon, Hansen, Wafler and Mora himself.

The Spaniard was the first to start with four laps to go, but his opponents took his wheel well and overtook him in the final turn. The silver finally went to Wafler, while the bronze went to Hansen. “I would have liked to be on the podium at least, although it may sound demanding,” Mora told the Royal Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC).

“I knew that Leitão was going to make a big change of pace, but no one responded to that attack and I already had to react four laps from the end. They took the wheel well, I saved a little for the sprint, but behind They came hard and I had to settle for that fifth place,” added Mora after the race.

LARRART YOU, FROM MORE TO LESS

The other event of the day for the Spanish team was the women’s omnium. Larrarte began her participation with an eleventh place in the scratch, followed by a seventh place in a ‘tempo race’ in which she was the protagonist. There she added four points and won a lap with the Czech Petra Sevcikova, but after assuming major responsibility for the peloton’s chase, she gave up the lap to catch her breath. That seventh place left her twelfth with 44 points overall.

In the elimination test, after being trapped in the inside rope, she finished seventeenth. Then in the scoring she started with the desire to make up for it and attacked from the start, along with the German Lea Lin Teutenberg, to add five more points. Finally, she was fourteenth with 57 points.

The morning session of this third day of the European Championship had featured great activity and diversity of fronts for the Spanish team. Alejandro Martínez and Pepe Moreno reaffirmed their good moment and took part in the individual speed trophy. Martínez surpassed 200 m. CRI qualifying with the fifteenth best time (9″944) and Moreno was ranked in twentieth place with a record of 10″034.
