Schalke’s Demotion of Sports Director Peter Knäbel Makes Headlines

Schalke is making headlines at the start of the new year!

On Monday afternoon, the Pott Club announced the demotion of Peter Knäbel (57) in an official announcement. The previous sports director was removed from his position, but is still active as an advisor until his departure on June 30th.

Supervisory board boss Axel Hefer said in the letter: “Together with our new CEO Matthias Tillmann and Christina Rühl-Hamers, we have made the decision to restructure football at Schalke without the position of the sports director. Since we want to make these adjustments at the start of the new year, we mutually agreed with Peter to end the collaboration at board level on January 1st. Further steps will be taken by the board as soon as possible.”

New CEO Matthias Tillmann has officially been in office since January 1st. Schalke had already announced his commitment at the beginning of October.

The statement continues: “We are very grateful to Peter for the work he has done and his tireless commitment to Schalke 04. He played a large part in stabilizing the club after relegation in 2021, in a very difficult sporting and financial situation could be. We wish him all the best for his private and professional future.”

Knäbel himself says of his advisory work until his departure: I will support them (the club, editor’s note) with all my might in the next six months in pushing forward some forward-looking projects in the areas of digitalization and sports science.

There had already been speculation in recent days about Knäbel’s removal from the board. There was also talk of immediate release. It was already announced in mid-November that Knäbel would definitely be leaving the club in the summer of 2024.

Knäbel at the time: “It was important to me to create clarity at an early stage, which is why I spoke to Axel Hefer (Chairman of the Supervisory Board, editor) a few weeks ago and told him about my future life plans, which included returning to my family Switzerland provides.”
