The SC Freiburg game against Union Berlin had its most emotional moment shortly before kick-off. When the late Franz Beckenbauer was remembered, Freiburg coach Christian Streich let his emotions run wild. Beckenbauer shaped his life, he said.

A black and white photo could be seen on the video wall in the Freiburg stadium. It showed Franz Beckenbauer, still in his better days, smiling and hugging Christian Streich. As in all Bundesliga stadiums, the football icon who died last Sunday was remembered in Breisgau before the game against Union Berlin (0-0). The Freiburg coach was lined up on the sidelines. He is, it may be said, one of the emperor’s great admirers. In any case, the death of the 78-year-old had a deep impact on him, and that was heartbreakingly evident before this game.

Streich stood there, initially just moved, while the stadium announcer said a few compassionate and appreciative sentences and the minute’s silence for Beckenbauer began. Then he could be seen struggling more and more to regain his composure and finally, in tears, giving vent to his emotions. At that moment, a great coach mourned the loss of the greatest German footballer.

During the week, Streich had already hinted at what Beckenbauer meant to him. A man who offered Streich the du right at the beginning of his coaching career. The 58-year-old said his godfather ran a restaurant opposite the Streichs’ butcher shop. There was a television in the next room. He saw all the 1974 World Cup games there. He was nine years old. “There was Beckenbauer. I could talk about him for ten hours. Franz Beckenbauer was everything for us. After every international match, as six, seven, eight and nine year olds, we went out and replayed the game. Sometimes alone, always commenting: ‘Beckenbauer goes through in the middle, passes to Müller…’”

“This hypocritical bunch. That was extreme for Franz.”

Streich reported that he then continued to follow Beckenbauer’s path with admiration. When he became the national coach, coach of FC Bayern, later as an official at the DFB, as organizer of the 2006 home World Cup, the summer fairy tale. “Then he won the world championship and then some people put the ladies down. This hypocritical bunch. What was very extreme for Franz – and what was completely – I don’t care what people think – completely wrong. Everyone wanted to bring the World Cup to Germany, everyone. Then it came and we all benefited brutally, especially socially. Nobody thought that something like this existed in Germany. Everyone abroad said: The Germans can’t be like that. And then he was the culprit. I thought that was terrible,” said Streich.

Background: In October 2015, the “Spiegel” appeared with the title “The Destroyed Summer Fairy Tale.” It was about the unexplained use of ten million Swiss francs. And although nothing has been proven to date, neither slush funds nor vote-buying in the World Cup, Beckenbauer was blanketed with suspicions and half-truths over the next few years. It gave the impression that one should monument will be destroyed. In any case, Beckenbauer suffered more from it than the public noticed, his friends report.

Streich was not one of those who condemned Beckenbauer. The Freiburg coach then shared an anecdote. Back then, as a young trainer, he was sitting in a group with Franz Beckenbauer in the Sky studio. When he told his father about this beforehand, “he said I was crazy. I’m sitting in a studio with Franz Beckenbauer. He couldn’t believe this. You can see what significance Franz had. Back in the show, Beckenbauer wanted to let me go first so I could put on the mask. I said I wouldn’t go into the mask, all that fuss, I didn’t want that. Beckenbauer said: But put on the mask. I didn’t dare contradict him. So I went in and the make-up artist told me: The man who just sent her in is the nicest man in this shop. That actually says everything about Franz Beckenbauer.”
