Sai van Wermeskerken Leaves NEC for Japan

Sai van Wermeskerken is leaving NEC. The right back is given the freedom to complete a transfer and will travel to Japan on Sunday, January 21.

Van Wermeskerken has a clause in his contract that gives him the right to exchange NEC for a club from Japan on a free transfer this winter break. Kawasaki Frontale and Van Wermeskerken have broadly agreed on a transfer. At the beginning of this week, Van Wermeskerken will undergo the medical examination in Japan.

Technical director Carlos Aalbers: “We brought Sai to Nijmegen at the end of October due to Brayann Pereira’s long-term injury. Sai was able to help us for a short period, so that we had double the right back position again. He already indicated that he had the ambition to play football in Japan and that is why we made agreements about a transfer during the winter break. Sai played an important role in the short period he was here, for which we would like to thank him!”

Van Wermeskerken is grateful for his time in Nijmegen: “I am extremely grateful to everyone at NEC for the past three months. When I trained with the NEC youth team at the age of 12, it became a dream to one day play for the first team. I am very proud that we succeeded, even though it ultimately turned out to be a shorter period than I had previously imagined. Nevertheless, I would like to emphasize that I have this group of players and the NEC supporters close to my heart. I wish the club great success this season!”
