RSC Anderlecht’s Nilson Angulo: A Second Chance to Shine

At RSC Anderlecht they have a lot of wealth in certain positions, in others there is a clear shortage. Brian Riemer has to figure things out at the front. Will a former transfer from Peter Verbeke get another chance? It may be his last.

Anderlecht brought Nilson Angulo to Belgium for 1.9 million euros in the summer of 2022. He was known as a talent in his own country, but the switch to the Jupiler Pro League turned out to be a very big step. Angulo couldn’t handle the level. It also didn’t help that he arrived after Vincent Kompany’s period.

The club made one wrong choice after another and he ended up in a team that was not well composed. Anderlecht finished 11th. Angulo was allowed to appear for the first team in 11 matches. He played 124 minutes with 0 goals and 0 assists. Angulo had difficulty with the pace and he also had to take many steps in terms of physical ability.

Steps taken at RSCA Futures

Brian Riemer came to Anderlecht and Angulo was allowed to work in the shadows at the Futures. He finished the season there with 2 goals and 0 assists in 736 minutes (11 games). He was not convincing enough in this regard. Angulo wasn’t part of Riemer’s plans this summer, but leaving was never really an option.

At the Futures he had to take the next step. The player from Ecuador did that. Angulo, who has made many strides in terms of strength and endurance, played 14 matches in the Challenger Pro League this season. Balance: 5 goals and 1 assist in 1,159 minutes.

Riemer recently made it clear that there is belief in the 20-year-old wing attacker within Anderlecht. “With Angulo, we at RSCA Futures have a type of wing attacker who can eventually move to the first team. Is that in January, April or next season? We will look at that in the coming weeks and months. He is doing very well for the Futures and is a player with many qualities that we really believe in.”

Decisive against KRC Genk

Angulo came on as a substitute in the 89th minute against KRC Genk. He was sent deep in extra time, kept track of the ball afterwards and served Théo Leoni. He passed the ball nicely to Anders Dreyer and the Dane scored the 2-1. Angulo was so involved in the victory. That must have given him a lot of confidence.

Riemer took him on an internship to Tunisia. Angulo gets an excellent opportunity to convince the coach. After a year and a half, can Riemer finally let Angulo come to fruition? If the player does not know how to persevere now, it seems to be the end of the story. So these will be important weeks and months for Angulo.
