Ronny Simon is the MVP of LIDOM

Santo Domingo.-The Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League (LIDOM) announced this Friday that the outfielder of the Toros del Este, Ronny Simon, was selected as the Jetour Most Valuable Player of the 2023-2024 championship after narrowly beating the shortstop of the Leones del Este. Simon obtained 317 points against González’s 311 in the weighted rating voting system that the league launched to choose the most outstanding in the contest dedicated to the communicator Onfalia Morillo and in which the Banreservas Cup is at stake.

The Bulls player took a wide advantage with his 33 votes for first place, which on the scale of the new selection method has a value of seven points each. The ballot for the La Romana native player also includes nine votes for second place, 14 for third, three for fourth and two for fifth place.

The scale grants four points to the second-place votes, three to the third-place votes, two to the fourth-place votes and one to the fifth-place votes.

Simón was the owner of a very outstanding performance for the Toros del Este in a season in which he played 45 games and hit 54 hits, including five home runs, in 164 at-bats for an average of .329, leading the circuit, in addition to driving in 21 runs and receive 32 tickets. He led the league in runs scored (36) and was co-leader in hits (54) and doubles (36).

Simon had a .306 average (36-11) with runners in scoring position and was the only player in the last regular season with 30 walks or more (32) and 30 runs or more (36).

Simón hit 17 extra-base hits and was one of two players with 80 or more bases reached.

The Jetour Most Valuable Player award for the 2023-24 tournament makes the 23-year-old the sixth Toros del Este player to win the award, joining Bobby Bowers (1986-87), Andújar Cedeño (1990-91) , Christian Adames (2014-15), Jordany Valdespin (2018-19) and Peter O’Brien (2019-20).

González, for his part, appeared on 19 ballots for first place, 37 for second, six for third, five for fourth and two for fifth, while his teammate in the Esído, Franmil Reyes, achieved 249 points for finish third in the fight for the prize. The outfielder and designated hitter recorded 14 first-place votes.

The 69-member jury of LIDOM is composed as follows: five communicators without work, professional or commercial affiliation with the six franchises in the cities with baseball teams (Santiago, San Francisco, Santo Domingo, San Pedro and La Romana), four members of the press directorates and broadcast networks of the six squads.

In addition, three Dominican communicators based in the United States, three international reporters established in the Dominican Republic and one communicator from the provinces without baseball organizations with regional equity based on the list of journalists accredited by the league, which are La Altagracia, El Seibo, María Trinidad Sánchez, Valverde, Puerto Plata, La Vega, Espaillat, Monsignor Nouel and Peravia.
