Roger Federer Claims 2017 Australian Open Victory Over Rafael Nadal in Epic Final

After a mixed year for both superstars in terms of sport, this start to the tennis year 2017 came as a surprise. On January 29, 2017, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal faced each other in the final of the Australian Open.

Both won two five-set matches on the way to the final: Nadal had to go the full distance against Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov, Federer against Kei Nishikori and Stan Wawrinka.

The final should also only be decided in the fifth set. Federer got off to a better start, winning the first round 6:4. Nadal then hit back and equalized the set at 6:3.

The third set was a clear affair for Federer, who won 6-1. In the fourth round, Nadal managed to break to 3-1, and the Spaniard ultimately won the round 6-3.

In the fifth set, after a hard fight, Federer took serve from his opponent when the score was 4:3. After 3:38 hours and a challenge at match point, the Swiss was crowned Australian Open champion.

“It’s a shame there’s no draw. I would love to share the success with Rafa, he deserves it too,” said Federer afterwards.
