Ricky Rubio will train with Barça Basket from Tuesday. This is what the player announced, explaining that he was entering “the final phase of rehabilitation”.
Last summer, the Catalan basketball player decided to put his career on hold in order to treat his mental health. His NBA career ended on January 4, when his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers expired. From now on, he feels “with the desire and the strength to see how he feels with the ball in his hands” and he asked Barça Basket to be able to train with the team “without commitment”.
Blaugrana between 2009 and 2011, he returned to training at Barcelona, after 12 seasons spent in the United States. He will be led by Roger Grimau during the training sessions. The 33-year-old will take part in training on Tuesday, the day before Barça – Virtus Segafredo Bologna which will be played at the Palau Blaugrana on Wednesday evening.

8 titles and 140 matches played with Barça
In two seasons at Barça, Rubio won 8 titles: 2 Catalan Leagues, 2 Super Cups, 2 Copas del Rey, a Liga (20/11) and a Euroleague (2009/20).
The second Euroleague in Barça’s history was won by captain Roger Grimau, who is now the team’s coach. The current manager, Juan Carlos Navarro, and assistant coach Víctor Sada, were also part of this epic.
At Barça, he played 140 official matches (84 in Liga ACB, 42 in Euroleague, 6 in Copa del Rey, 4 in Super Cup and 4 in Catalan Liga).
The American dream
Born in 1990, Ricky Rubio arrived at Barça in 2009 when he was only 19 years old. He was the 5th pick in the draft that year. Trained at Masnou and Joventut de Badalona, he made his ACB debut at just 14 years old. He then chose Barça and took a step forward before joining the NBA, where he played 712 games in 12 seasons, playing for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns and Cleveland Cavaliers.
He suffered a serious knee injury (2012 and 2021) but he was the player who intercepted the most balls in 2012/13, 2013/14 and 2015/16. He then became one of the stars of world basketball.
International glory
With the Spanish selection, Ricky Rubio won the silver medal at the Beijing Olympics, for his first participation in a competition with the A. He played a total of 157 matches with La Roja and was even elected MVP of the 2019 World Cup.
He won 7 medals for the selection: gold at Euro 2009 and 2011, world gold in 2019, silver at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and bronze at Euro 2013 and 2017 as well as at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
