Remembering Víctor “Vitito” Ojeda: A Tribute to a Basketball Legend

San Juan Puerto Rico – The basketball community in Puerto Rico and internationally is mourning the death of Víctor “Vitito” Ojeda, a prominent former leader of the men’s National Basketball Team. The Puerto Rico Basketball Federation confirmed his death, although the causes of his death were not detailed.

Ojeda is remembered for his significant contribution to Puerto Rican basketball, especially for leading the National Team to its victory at the 1978 Central American and Caribbean Games in Medellín, Colombia, where Puerto Rico won the gold medal.

Additionally, that same year, Ojeda led the team at the FIBA ​​World Cup in Manila, Philippines, where the team reached an outstanding tenth position, with notable players such as Raymond Dalmau, Mario “Quijote” Morales, Georgie Torres and Rubén Rodríguez .

His impact on basketball was not limited to his role as a coach.

Ojeda also served as director of the Americas Basketball Academy of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) for 17 years, from 2000 to 2017. In 2010, he was appointed to the World Coaches Central Commission. In addition, he had an outstanding career in the National Superior Basketball, both as a player and as a commentator.

Ojeda also played a fundamental role in the education and training of young athletes in Puerto Rico. He was athletic director of Colegio San Ignacio de Loyola, where he imparted his knowledge and experiences in sports. His work at the school not only focused on high sports performance, but also on the comprehensive development of students, emphasizing the importance of education and sports in the training of young leaders.
