Remembering Salvatore Azzarello: A Master of Judo and Life

The death of Salvatore Azzarello, a well-known figure in the world of judo who recently retired, has caused great emotion in the city.

He was 61 years old. Salvatore Azzarello’s last words to the reporter

He left on tiptoe, as if he were moving lightly, despite his size, for the knowledge of that art of which he was a master, on the thick tatami of his dojo, in Viale dei Tigli, surrounded by his many children to whom, over the course of a lifetime of teaching, he not only showed the figures of the discipline he loved so much, but even the right ways to grow in the best way, to become good people like he was. Salvatore Azzarello, 61 years old, from Biella, master of judo and life, expert in woodworking and Japanese ceramics, passionate about fly fishing, has left a myriad of friends and former students by facing his last and terrible opponent with the courage and pride that have always distinguished him.
A few months ago he retired after having worked for almost twenty years as a night operator in the municipal structure of Piazza Del Monte, in Riva, with the “Maria Cecilia” cooperative.
«My job – he told a reporter in the following days of the longed-for goal achieved – consisted of welcoming people in the evening, providing them with what was expected: food, blankets, clothes. And remain on duty until the next morning. At night, silent and shy men speak… they open up and tell stories. In our facility there are places for sixteen men and four women. The premises, food and everything else are of an excellent standard…”.
What he cared most about, what filled his heart and soul, was teaching the fantastic oriental discipline to his many children: the fundamentals, gymnastics, positions, holds, imbalances and falls, from which – he explained – one must always be able to get up again.
“Rei” great master.
