Remembering “La Mole” – The Legacy of Maricet Espinosa in Cuban Judo

The world of Cuban judo and international sports is mourning the unexpected death of Maricet Espinosa González, affectionately known as “La Mole.” This Sunday, the double Pan-American champion died at the age of 34, leaving an indelible legacy in judo and in the hearts of her followers.

Maricet Espinosa, originally from Havana, was born on January 2, 1990 and from a young age she stood out in judo, a sport in which she became an iconic figure on the Island. Her career was marked by numerous triumphs, including two championships. Pan American championships in Costa Rica 2013 and Ecuador 2014, and a runner-up in Havana 2016, always competing in the 63 kilogram category.

In addition to her Pan American successes, Maricet Espinosa was a formidable competitor on multiple international stages. She earned bronze medals at World Cups in Rio, Tokyo, Miami and the Havana Grand Prix. In 2015, she took bronze at the Qingdao Grand Prix and began 2016 with a silver medal at the Havana Grand Prix, showing her skill and dedication in each competition.

The judoka also shone at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. In her first fight, she defeated the Nepalese Lhamu Khatri by wazari, although she later fell to the Israeli Yarden Gerbi.

The death of Maricet Espinosa has shocked the sports community, both inside and outside Cuba. According to reports, he died due to a heart attack, related to a recent cosmetic operation, in which he sought to have a breast implant. This news has caused deep sorrow among his teammates, coaches, friends, family and admirers.
