Remembering Franz Beckenbauer: A Tribute Fit for an Emperor

Worthy of an emperor.

Franz Beckenbauer (†78) is above everything on the 17th Bundesliga matchday. A minute’s silence was held for the Bayern legend in all stadiums. Beckenbauer fell asleep peacefully surrounded by his family last Sunday.

Our world champion from 1974 (player) and 1990 (coach) and maker of summer fairy tales will also be specially honored in the “Current Sports Studio” on ZDF – with a five-minute special clip at the start of the program.

The five minutes mainly focus on Beckenbauer’s past appearances in the “Sportstudio”. Former ZDF reporter Béla Réthy (67): “For me, Franz Beckenbauer is the greatest German ambassador of all time. It was thanks to him that the 2006 World Cup came to Germany. “It was an image campaign that no politician has ever managed before him and won’t be able to do after him either.”

In addition, the former sports studio presenter, Dieter Kürten (88, 1967 to 2000), speaks in detail about Beckenbauer. At the beginning a scene by Kürten and Beckenbauer from the Sportstudio broadcast on October 31, 1992 is shown. As usual in the gym, Kürten asks Beckenbauer to go to the goal wall.

Kürten remembers: “Then he says, now you go, shoot with your big mouth, show me.” Kürten then confidently transformed the program at the time.

Réthy: “Franz Beckenbauer knew no hierarchies. For him, all people were equal.”

In between, scenes from Beckenbauer’s legendary walk across the pitch after the 1990 World Cup title are shown.

Rethy continues: “Franz Beckenbauer was also a permanent guest in our current sports studio. At the time when he shot the ball from a wheat beer glass into the goal wall. When he insulted all the reporters.”

Kürten: “Both of us who believe in life after death will perhaps see each other again. And they have a goal wall up there too.”

A goal wall shootout with Beckenbauer in heaven – a beautiful idea!
