Reflections of a Baseball Mom: Discoveries and Culture Shock in the World of Youth Baseball

A mother of two sons shares her “new discoveries” after experiencing youth baseball

“Youth baseball looks like it’s going to be tough,” is a comment I often hear.

Ms. Miyazaki, a working mother whose eldest son, a junior high school student, plays on a baseball team and her second son, an elementary school student, on a local after-school baseball team, said, “When my children first told me they wanted to play baseball, I thought youth baseball would be difficult. “I felt hesitant because I had the impression that it would be troublesome.”

But there are many things you won’t know until you try. The Miyazaki family says that their father is now a baseball fan, and “even when we go out to eat, we always talk about baseball.”

“Until then, my husband had never had much involvement with his children as a father. However, when he started playing youth baseball, he started playing catch with his children and following practice, and the communication between father and son became very close. I feel like it’s a big deal,” Miyazaki continued.

He participated in after-school baseball and was able to connect with his fathers. Although some may think that this is troublesome, “Personally, I think that the relationship that grows through children is a good thing,” Miyazaki says.

At the same time, he realizes the difficulty of playing baseball for after-school children, which is almost a volunteer activity.

The managers and coaches are also volunteers, some of whom are parents of alumni and others with baseball experience in the area. There aren’t enough hands, so the fathers gather together to help. We all do different jobs, have different titles, and are from different generations, so we sometimes get into trouble.

There must be a huge difference in enthusiasm and enthusiasm for baseball. “Is it pretty chaotic?” I asked him rudely, and he looked up a little and tilted his head.

“That’s true, but these days I think that having different opinions and getting into trouble isn’t always a bad thing. When you grow up, you inevitably only get together with people from the same category. However, people who are completely different from you get together.” You can make new discoveries by participating in the community.”

He continues like this. “There will be small problems, but we will solve them somehow. It may be an exaggeration to say that you will develop a level-headed sense of the situation, as there are some types of people you have never met before. My husband and I jokingly say that if you experience this volunteer organization, you will be able to do well in any other place.”

Even a single glove is expensive…Culture shock experienced in a hardball league

On the other hand, when he became a junior high school student, he said there was a certain order to the team he belonged to. Because it’s a monthly fee system, it’s easier to understand than after-school baseball, which is a volunteer game.

“However, when it came to junior high school baseball, there was a slight culture shock that was different from after-school baseball.First of all, when it came to hardball, even a single glove was more expensive than a softball. It also cost a lot of money. Parents’ enthusiasm is also completely different. Many children are encouraged to pursue sports or are thinking about high school baseball as a prerequisite. My husband and I have only played club sports, so we were surprised to see that such a world exists. ”

For example, let’s think about cram school. If you go to a small cram school in your neighborhood hoping to improve your grades in school, the teaching method will be different, and the amount of parental support will also be different if you go to a high-level cram school to prepare for entrance exams for a difficult school. Dew. Miyazaki says it’s similar to that.

Mr. Miyazaki, who has experienced both, believes that in the end, each family should choose a team based on their own stance and play baseball.

The question I get asked every time I have a trial session is “about duty”.

Although the number of youth baseball players is said to be decreasing, the team to which Mr. Miyazaki’s second son belongs has seen an increase in the number of children who have become interested in baseball due to their experience playing T-ball in elementary school classes and the WBC effect, and the number of new members has increased. It seems that it is increasing. Miyazaki, who plays the role of a manager in after-school baseball, says he is asked about his duty at every trial session.

“In my after-school baseball game, there are on-duty teams, but they don’t come out that often. Participation in cheering on the games is voluntary. Everyone’s home environment is different, so I think it’s okay for each person to take their own stance.”

There are some types who do the bare minimum and don’t get involved in the rest. It varies from person to person, such as going to the field every time, or coming to the game without fail.

Miyazaki says that the minimum requirement varies depending on the team, so “At the trial session, it’s important to listen carefully to the role of parents, and then observe the overall atmosphere.” Furthermore, “Depending on the team, some traditions may remain that do not fit with the current times. As parents, we need to assess the stance of the team, but the team may also need to change in accordance with the times.” I can’t do it,” he continued.

“What I found interesting was the change in my husband. When we started working together with our eldest son, he was so enthusiastic that we practiced in the morning together. However, we often get into fights between parent and child.” I’ll be there for you on Saturdays and Sundays,” and I’d think, “No, no, you’re actively involved because you like it, right?” (lol) But that’s how it is at first. You know, I don’t say anything to my second son anymore.”

Mr. Miyazaki himself has started going to professional baseball games with his children. The shape of the family changes little by little as the child grows up. Parents and children may be wondering and worrying, but before they know it, they are moving forward, leaving behind their own footprints. It’s great to have a family where youth baseball plays a central role. Your child’s interests may change at some point, but if there’s something they’re passionate about right now, it’s great for the whole family to come together and support it.

Mr. Miyazaki has been tanning all year round, looking like he just returned from Hawaii. “Right now, I’m also in charge of the camera, so I don’t let people use parasols, and even when I wear sunscreen, I end up turning black,” he says with a laugh. He has a nice smile as he enjoys being the mother of youth baseball players.

To all the moms of youth baseball, there may be many things going on, but let’s spend time together crying, getting angry, and laughing with our kids. The days of “boy” baseball are actually very short. There will come a time when you will nostalgic for the intense time you had with your parents and children.
