Raúl Allegre: The Only Mexican Player to Win a Super Bowl

Super Bowl LVIII is approaching and it is a good time to remember the only Mexican who has been present at an event of that level as an NFL player. There are few Mexicans who have played this sport professionally, but Raúl Allegre is part of Mexico’s history in American football.

Raúl Allegre had a great career as an American football player in the NFL where he broke any barrier and exceeded all expectations. He was born in Torreón, Coahuila in 1959, it was at the age of 18 when he went to study in the United States at the high school in Shelton, Washington. He tried his hand at the sport as a kicker and from there he attracted attention.

During high school he managed to break several records, then he arrived at the University of Texas Longhorns and graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. He came to the NFL in 1983, as the Dallas Cowboys took him as a free agent, but that same year he was transferred to the Baltimore Colts, he was chosen to be part of the Pro Bowl, but he was also cut from the franchise that year.

It was then that he arrived with the New York Giants, where he managed to make history, as he won two Super Bowls, the first time was in SB XXI when he beat the Denver Broncos, and the second in SP XXV against the Buffalo Bills. Allegre became the second Mexican to win the Vince Lombardi.

He retired after playing one year with the New York Jets in 1992, after nine years in the NFL, Raúl Allegre left an important legacy on the team and a source of pride for Mexico. He finished his professional career with 137 field goals, 183 extra points and 594 points in the regular season including 30 in the playoffs.

Isaac Alarcon y Alfredo Gutierrez They are the Mexicans in the NFL.

Currently in the NFL there are two Mexicans, they are Isaac Alarcón and Alfredo Gutiérrez, the athletes got there thanks to the International Player Pathway Program. Alarcón arrived in 2020 as a reserve player for the Dallas Cowboys, unfortunately he was released before the season. Although he now arrived as a reserve for the San Francisco 49ers.

Alfredo Gutierrez also arrived in 2021 with San Francisco and now two Mexicans will be teammates in the NFL. Additionally, the 49ers are one of the candidates to win Super Bowl LVIII.
