The new year begins with bad news for 1. FC Union Berlin. Köpenicker, who are threatened with relegation, will have to do without Rani Khedira for an indefinite period of time. The defensive midfielder must “take a break from team training for the time being,” the club announced late on Thursday afternoon.
This is what the medical examinations revealed for Khedira, who injured his left calf on Wednesday morning after a duel with Alex Kral and ended the session prematurely.
Use in Freiburg very questionable
Traditionally, Union did not want to give a prediction as to when the vice-captain would be able to start training again. But his appearance in the first league game of the year on January 13th (3:30 p.m.) at SC Freiburg is likely to be shaky.
Khedira has had to sit out a few times in this season, which has been so unfavorable for Union so far. On August 13th, he seriously injured his right calf in the DFB Cup game against FC-Astoria Walldorf (4-0). He was therefore out until the end of October.
In November he was also suspended for three championship games. In the Bundesliga he only played five of 16 games in this series. The absence of Khedira also led to the crisis in the 15th place. Union. Nobody in the current squad can replace Khedira equally.
Will staff now be helped?
Now it seems that there may be a need for personnel action. Especially if Khedira is out for a longer period of time again. The transfer period runs until February 1st.
From the current squad, Kral could probably take over Khedira’s role again, probably as early as Saturday. At 3:30 p.m. third division team Arminia Bielefeld will be guests at the An der Alten Försterei stadium for the only test match of the short preparation.
