The 22-time Grand Slam champion convincingly defeated local hero Jason Kubler 6:1, 6:2 in the round of 16 of the ATP tournament on the east coast of Australia and is approaching in preparation for the Australian Open (January 14th to 28th). Almost a year off from injury at his best.

“Two wins after a long break, that feels very good. I’m very happy,” said Nadal: “I have to keep training well, every win and every hour on the court helps me.”

Nadal (37) underwent hip flexor surgery after the Australian Open in January 2023, and a long period of suffering began. In Brisbane he had already impressed in his opening game against former US Open winner Dominic Thiem.

Against Kubler, who had problems with his right hitting arm, he converted his second match point after 1:20 hours of play. In the quarterfinals, Nadal will face Australian Jordan Thompson.
