Il mayor of Monterotondo Varone (PD) with a great sense of coherence (an extremely rare commodity) has decided this year too not to sign theNew Year’s anti-banter ordinance which instead the majority of Italian mayors signed between December 30th and 31st.

The fact requires a simple and serious reflection: but what are these ordinances for?

Net of the meritorious activities of the police which in particular in the month of December intensify controls to stamp out the trafficking and sale of illegal fireworks and barrels, there is a whole world of legal pyrotechnics whose sale is therefore permitted and legal.

The question is therefore the following: what checks are carried out during New Year’s Eve and in the following days to catch those who explode firecrackers or other things? What is the budget of this activity? It is possible to have from the municipalities, starting from the next ones as Frascati, Grottaferrata, Marino and so on, the data on how many checks have been carried out e.g how many sanctions were raised for failure to comply with the ordinances?

Otherwise, what’s the point of issuing these measures? We agree with respect for animals (the main reason why these ordinances are issued) and the attempt to make the moment of the change of year more “civilized”, but the feeling – and let’s return to the questions – that these are “pro form” is strong. All that remains is to wait for any feedback from the Administrations to better understand the effectiveness of the ordinances in question.
