PSV equaled an ancient Eredivisie record on Saturday. The team of coach Peter Bosz won 3-1 against Excelsior thanks to a hat trick from Luuk de Jong. It was the seventeenth Eindhoven victory in a row.

The last time a club started the competition with seventeen victories was PSV itself in the 1987/1988 season. The team of then coach Guus Hiddink lost points in the eighteenth match. The Eindhoven team can therefore break the record next Sunday against FC Utrecht.

The victory over Excelsior came about thanks to De Jong. The 33-year-old striker opened the score in the thirteenth minute with a striker. This provided De Jong with a memorable achievement, as he entered the top ten of Eredivisie top scorers of all time.

A few minutes later, De Jong already had his second of the evening on the scoreboard. He easily headed home after a cross from Sergiño Dest. Excelsior had to fear that PSV could take the abacus, but the 2-0 was also the halftime score.

De Jong completed his hat-trick in the second half. The experienced attacker was in the right place to put the 3-0 over the goal line. PSV then took their foot off the accelerator, which gave Excelsior the opportunity to score a goal of honor. The 3-1 was scored by Derensili Sanches Fernandes.

Lang returns in mediocre final phase of PSV

The most striking name in PSV’s starting line-up was that of André Ramalho. The Brazilian defender was passed over in the last game before the winter break and was sent off in a practice match last week. He ‘just’ kicked off against Excelsior.

Noa Lang was fit again after two months of injuries, but still started on the bench. The creative winger was brought in by Bosz in the 76th minute, but that did not benefit PSV’s game.

A few minutes later, Excelsior made it 3-1 and in the final phase it even seemed to become 3-2. PSV regretted that Oscar Uddenäs’ goal was disallowed for offside.

PSV won for the seventeenth time in a row. This puts the Eindhoven team in the lead in the Eredivisie. The victory record can be improved next week in Utrecht. The Eindhoven team will first receive FC Twente on Wednesday in the second round of the cup tournament.
