PSIM Jogja’s Hopes for Liga 2 Semifinals Dwindling After Draw Against Semen Padang

Harianjogja.com, JOGJA—PSIM Jogja’s dream of qualifying for the semifinals of Liga 2 2023 is almost certain to be shattered after the match against Semen Padang last weekend ended in a draw with a score of 0-0.

Now Laskar Mataram is still stuck in third place in Group X with six points. At the top of the standings is Persiraja with 9 points and Semen Padang in second place with a collection of 7 points. In the final match of Group X, PSIM will visit PSMS Medan while Persiraja will be the visiting team against Semen Padang.

For information, the 2023 League 2 semifinal contestants are taken from the top of groups X, Y and Z and one of the best second place teams. Only PSBS Biak from group Z has confirmed that they will qualify for the semifinals with 13 points.

Meanwhile, the second best position is currently held by Malut United in first place, followed by Semen Padang and Gresik United, all three of which both have seven points, only a difference in goal difference.

With a draw in the previous match, is there still a chance for PSIM Jogja to qualify for the semifinals via the best second place route? Let’s dissect it.

If PSIM wins against PSMS in the last match, Laskar Mataram’s points will automatically increase to nine. If the match ends in a loss or draw for PSIM there is no longer any hope for Hariono and his colleagues to qualify for the next round.

With nine points if Laskar Mataram wins against PSMS, they have to look at the results of another match between Semen Padang vs Persiraja. If Persiraja wins, Laskar Rencong is certain to qualify for the semifinals with a collection of 12 points and PSIM sits in second place.

Meanwhile, if Kabau Sirah wins their points collection will be 10 and Persiraja and PSIM’s points collection will both be nine points. All that remains is to determine the second ranking which needs to be detailed by PT LIB, whether through a head to head scheme or goal difference.

If it goes through a head to head scheme, the second place in Group X will automatically be held by Persiraja because they drew at PSIM’s home ground and won at home. However, if it is through goal difference, PSIM must score more than four goals against PSMS provided that Persiraja also concedes against Semen Padang.

This is because Persiraja has scored six goals and conceded two goals. Meanwhile PSIM scored five goals while conceding six goals. All these explanations are new for group X only, meaning that PSIM has to wait for other results in different groups to qualify for the semifinals.

PSIM Jogja head coach Kas Hartadi said his team is targeting victory in the remaining matches. “We still have one most important match tomorrow in Medan, point three. There are no more stories of losing or drawing and of course looking at the results of other teams’ matches,” he said.

The former Sriwijaya FC coach admitted that he was not too concerned about the second best ranking issue. “The important thing is to keep the target of winning in Medan later. So I will calculate the runner-up issue later,” he said.
