Pro-Palestinian Protesters Interrupt Australian Open Match: Chaos and Courage in the Stands

Incident during the round of 16 match of the Australian Open between Alexander Zverev (26) and Briton Cameron Norrie (28). When the score was 4-1 in the third set, protesters stormed into the stands and threw leaflets onto the field at one end.

Unbelievable: no steward or police officer showed up. Courageous spectators intervened, overwhelmed the troublemakers and led them away. The chaotics fought back, but had no chance. As the spectators returned to their seats in the Margaret Court Arena, there was huge applause from the audience.

According to initial information, it is a pro-Palestinian protest. The leaflets read “Free Palestine”. After a minute the game continued. Zverev was leading 7:5, 3:6, 4:1 at the time. A statement from organizer Tennis Australia is still pending.

The game is still ongoing.
