Premier League, what are Wolverhampton’s Star Trek glasses for – Corriere.it

In the Premier League, Wolverhampton players use “daylight glasses”, glasses that project light into the players’ eyes to keep them alert

The glasses similar to those of Star Trek in the Premier League. She is the latest find in the English championship, which is arousing great curiosity. You can see it all in a video in which the Wolverhampton players, while at dinner on the eve of the match against Brighton (which ended 0-0), are wearing this sort of equipment which is very reminiscent in appearance of a visor used in one of the series of Star Trek, in fact.

In essence, these are “daylight glasses”. They are glasses that project light into the players’ eyes to keep them alert as the brightness of the day fades. Players use them for breakfast most days, wearing them for up to half an hour and even before evening games.

The club used them during Nuno Espirito Santo’s management between 2017 and 2020 and now Gary O’Neil has reintroduced them, giving the credit to the medical team: «It’s not me, it’s something the medical staff and trainers do. I think they’re called daylight glasses.” He then added: «Especially during evening games, when it gets dark the body gets tired and gets ready for bed, but we have to be completely alert, so they help with this. The medical team told me about them and I had no problem trying them. Normally, if things like that don’t work, they get out of the way pretty quickly. But kids still use them, we’re trying to get some benefits. I don’t think they’re a magic wand that fixes everything, but they’re part of being professionals in kids who give themselves the best opportunities to be in top physical shape.”

Many people wonder how they work. It all has to do with the circadian rhythm, the body’s natural clock that determines when a person feels awake or sleepy and repeats itself every 24 hours. So, the light from the glasses can prevent you from feeling tired during the day, but also help stop the effects of jet lag. A technology also used by Manchester City.
