Naomi Osaka was eliminated on her return in the first round of the Australian Open on Monday. The Japanese four-time Grand Slam winner lost to the French Caroline Garcia. Wimbledon winner Markéta Vondrousová was eliminated by Ukrainian qualifier Dayana Yastremska.

The 26-year-old Osaka (WTA-831) lost the first set after a break in the fifth game, but immediately recovered in the second set. Only in the tiebreak did she have to give up against the much higher ranked Garcia (WTA-19): 6-4 and 7-6 (2).

Osaka made her return two weeks ago in Brisbane after a long absence. She last played at the Tokyo tournament in September 2022. In July 2023, she gave birth to a daughter.

The 24-year-old Vondrousová withdrew from the Adelaide preparatory tournament last week with a hip injury. The Czech did not make a fit impression in Melbourne either. She immediately lost her first service game and soon found herself trailing 5-0. In the end it was 6-1 and 6-2.

Yastremska impressed with a total of 26 winners. Vondrousová only hit 5. For Yastremska it was the fourth time that she recorded a victory against a player from the top ten.

Nineteen-year-old Coco Gauff lost only three games in her first match at the Australian Open. The number four in the world was too strong for the Slovakian Anna Karolína Schmiedlová with 6-3 and 6-0.
