Ohio State is turning some of its negative momentum around. Just a few days after adding a key piece to the 2024 roster in Kansas State transfer quarterback Will Howard, the Buckeyes received some good news on the recruiting trail with the commitment of five-star cornerback Devin Sanchez. Here is what you need to know:
Sanchez, who plays at North Shore High School in Houston, is ranked No. 6 nationally and No. 2 overall in the Class of 2025 in the 247Sports Composite.
He’s the highest-rated cornerback to commit to Ohio State since Jeff Okudah in the 2017 cycle.
He is the fifth member of Ohio State’s 2025 class and the third commitment who ranks in the top 100 nationally.
Impact for Ohio State
Cornerbacks coach Tim Walton is on fire. Sanchez is the latest win for Walton on the trail after locking down Aaron Scott, Bryce West and Miles Lockhart in the 2024 class and Davison Igbinosun in the transfer portal last offseason.
Sanchez can be a star at Ohio State. He’s already 6 feet 2 and has the body traits and athleticism to be an immediate impact player as he continues to mature through his next year of high school football.
Ohio State’s cornerbacks have been preaching that BIA (Best in America) is back, and with the addition of Sanchez, the Buckeyes seem to be stockpiling top-flight talent at the position. Just in the last two seasons, Ohio State has added Igbinosun and Jermaine Mathews Jr. — who played well as a freshman — and will soon welcome in Scott, West and Lockhart. The battle for playing time might be tough, but Denzel Burke and Jordan Hancock (and possibly Igbinosun) will be gone by the time Sanchez is on campus.
Ohio State has proven over the last two years it will play freshman corners if they’re ready. Mathews played last season, and Jyaire Brown played two seasons ago before being passed on the depth chart by Mathews. Walton doesn’t discriminate by class, and recruits can tell. Sanchez will have the opportunity to play right away.
