In his second round victory at the Australian Open against Alexei Popyrin (ATP 43), Novak Djokovic encountered unexpected challenges. A confrontation with a fan and changes to the entry rules caused a stir.

In the fourth set, with the score at 2-2, a fan provoked Djokovic from the stands. The Serbian tennis star confronted the viewer with the words: “Say it to my face!” After this incident, Djokovic dominated the game and only lost one more game. Djokovic later expressed frustration over the incident and stressed that he would not tolerate border crossings.

Solidarity from Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios, currently on hiatus due to injury and working as a TV pundit in Melbourne, showed solidarity with Djokovic. In the Eurosport interview, he offered to deal with the disruptive fan on Djokovic’s behalf and expressed his full support. “Let’s do some WWE (wrestling) in the crowd, I’ll get the guy out of here.”

Dissatisfaction with new entry rules

In addition to the argument with the fan, the new entry rules at the Australian Open also caused Djokovic’s displeasure. The rule change, which allows spectators to go to their seats between points, leads to more unrest in the stadium. Djokovic and other top players such as Stefanos Tsitsipas expressed criticism as they felt distracted by the changed atmosphere.
