Joao Maldonado and Nadia Robleto
One of the founders of the Nicaraguan Exile Unit (UEN) in Costa Rica, João Maldonado, was shot at today at 11 am in San Pedro, canton of Montes de Oca. Along with him, his wife was also attacked, Nadia Robletoof the same age as Maldonado37 years.
Maldonado is a Nicaraguan activist and former Central American judo champion, who worked in the regime’s government Ortega-Murillo until April 2018, when he participated in the protests in Nicaragua.
Maldonado He went into exile in Costa Rica since July 2018 and was later one of the founders of the Nicaraguan Exile Unit in Costa Rica.
He had already been attacked on two occasions.
On September 12, 2021, he was attacked in San José when he was preparing for a march scheduled for that day against the Nicaraguan government. On that occasion, two men shot at the vehicle in which he was traveling from a motorcycle. The activist had been shot at least three times and was seriously injured. The secretary of the UEN, Yefer Bravo attributed the attack to hitmen hired by Ortega.
