NFL’s First Head Coach Dismissed: Atlanta Falcons’ Arthur Smith Out After Regular Season

Just hours after the end of the regular season, the NFL’s first head coach was hit: Arthur Smith has to leave the Atlanta Falcons. He probably won’t be the last coach to have to take his hat off on “Black Monday”.

On the Monday after the last NFL weekend of the regular season, personnel consequences are traditionally drawn: Not only coaches have to fear for their jobs, general managers or members of the coaching staff can also be affected.

Arthur Smith is the first this time: In the three seasons with the head coach, the Falcons did not participate in the playoffs and did not have a positive season record. Under Smith (41), the Falcons finished each season with seven wins and ten losses.

“Decisions like this are never easy and they never feel good,” said club owner Arthur M. Blank. Although Smith “contributed to building a good culture on our football team,” the results did not meet the franchise’s expectations.

Atlanta lost 17:48 to the New Orleans Saints on Sundaythe second half was lost 0:31.
