Néstor David Díaz Named Leader of Dominican National Senior Basketball Team for Americup Window

SANTO DOMINGO.- Néstor David Díaz has been appointed leader of the national senior basketball team for the next Americup window, the Dominican Basketball Federation reported this Sunday (Fedombal).

Through a press release, the president of Fedombal, Rafael Uribe valued Díaz’s technical ability and highlighted that his long experience in the national team alongside strategists Kenny Atkinson, José Mercedes, Melvin López and Néstor García will be of enormous help in the performance of his duties.

Díaz assumes the position of head leader of the tricolor squad for the first time after almost a decade in the role of assistant coach. “We are more than sure that David has the necessary experience to take charge of the team,” Uribe said. “He is the perfect coach to lead this team in this first Americup window. He is a foolproof professional and gets along very well with all the players.”

Díaz will be assisted by technicians Abraham Disla, Julio Duquela and Jonathan Sarnelly Matos.

The matches of this first Americup window will be against the Mexican team on February 23 and 26, the first at the Virgilio Travieso Soto Sports Palace and the second on Aztec soil.

Díaz is a successful 46-year-old coach native of San Francisco de Macorís who has been part of the coaching staff of the Quisqueyan representation since 2015. As a manager he has won in different settings in the Dominican Republic, including championships in the National Basketball League in 2013 , 2016 and 2019 with the Indios de San Francisco de Macorís and Leones de Santo Domingo.

As a player, he was a member of the 1998 national squad during the Central American and Caribbean Games in Maracaibo, Venezuela, which won an undefeated gold medal.

Díaz replaces García, who first signed as a coach in the Saudi Arabian League and was later announced as the leader of the team of that Middle Eastern country. Uribe highlighted that Fedombal wishes García good luck in his new challenge with a country like Saudi Arabia, which is one of the best 20 economies in the world thanks to its preponderance in oil exports.
