“After winning a medal at the Paralympics, I want to propose and get married within this year. “I also want to see her classmate Yuna Kim.”

Kwon Hyeon-ah (34, Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled), the national wheelchair badminton representative, smiled as she watched her medal win at the Paris Paralympic Games, which opens in August.

In an interview held at the Icheon Disabled Athletes’ Village in Gyeonggi Province on the 25th, Kwon Hyun-ah said, “I will participate in the women’s singles and women’s doubles at the Paralympic Games,” and “my goal is to win medals in both events.”

Kwon Hyun-ah is ranked 5th in the world in women’s singles and 3rd in women’s doubles. She is talented enough to have a chance at a gold medal depending on her condition and match-up on the day. Hyunah Kwon won a bronze medal in the mixed doubles at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games last year. In the women’s doubles, where she was paired with Jeong Winter (21, Korea Employment Agency for the Disabled), she finished in fourth place. “She is training hard with her business teammate Jeong Winter, aiming for her Paralympic medal,” she said. “She is a singles competitor, and as doubles partners, we encourage and strengthen each other.” said.

Hyuna Kwon’s goals are a medal at the Paris Paralympic Games, a proposal, and getting married within this year. Hyun-ah Kwon said, “I will propose to my boyfriend (Choi Won-geun), who is 7 years older than me, whom I have been dating for 8 years, with her Paralympic medal,” she said, adding, “I also want to get married within this year,” she laughed.

Mr. Choi is a former member of the national wheelchair rugby team and is now switching to table tennis. Kwon Hyun-ah said, “I met Mr. Choi, who works as a wheelchair salesperson, for the first time and our eyes met. He was a grateful lover who took care of me well, accepting everything I complained about.” It was also Choi who brought Kwon Hyun-ah, who had not played sports until then, into her sports world. Hyun-ah Kwon said, “I became interested in sports when she started playing wheelchair rugby following her boyfriend,” and “she started playing badminton in earnest in 2018 at the recommendation of her father.”

It’s only been 7 years since I started playing badminton. It is a long-acting type that grows rapidly in a short period of time. Hyun-ah Kwon said, “I am confident in moving quickly in a wheelchair and hitting the shuttlecock hard and high clear.” She added, “My team has a dedicated gym and dormitory, and the environment has improved. “The only thing left to do is train hard and win a medal,” he said.

Hyunah Kwon graduated from Gimpo Suri High School. She is the ‘figure queen’ and she and Yuna Kim were in the same class when she was in second grade. Kwon Hyun-ah said, “Kim Yu-na had a very small face and her body proportions were very good,” and she recalled, “She received a lot of attention at the time, with many reporters coming to the school.” At that time, it was the time leading up to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, when Yuna Kim and Mao Masada received public attention. Hyuna Kwon said, “After I became an athlete later, I deeply realized that Yuna Kim was a truly great athlete.” “Yuna Kim probably doesn’t know me very well,” she said of Kwon Hyun-ah. “But I hope to meet Yuna Kim someday,” she said with a laugh.

Hyunah Kwon became disabled after a fall when she was 6 years old. He worked as a web designer before picking up the racket. Hyuna Kwon said, “As my physical strength has become stronger through exercise, I have been able to engage in more outdoor activities. I hope that more people with disabilities will exercise hard and get outside.”
