Timo Werner leaves RB Leipzig

As expected, national striker Timo Werner is leaving RB Leipzig for London. As Tottenham Hotspur announced, the 27-year-old is moving to the English first division club on loan until the end of the season.

This change is surprising. Timo Werner is leaving Leipzig and is now storming for Tottenham Hotspurs in the Premier League. The striker doesn’t receive a particularly friendly welcome in England; there is a lot of ridicule for the out-of-form 27-year-old.

Timo Werner’s move to Tottenham Hotspurs was less than 24 hours old when there was already a hail of ridicule and criticism in Great Britain about the loan from RB Leipzig. Some media outlets were surprised that the striker, who was unable to establish himself at Chelsea between 2020 and 2022, is now supposed to strengthen Spurs in attack.

In a video that Tottenham released to present Werner, Chelsea fans made fun of the German international. In the clip, Werner points to the Spurs club emblem, but the angle gives the impression that he is missing the target. “Of course wrong,” one user commented smugly.

Timo Werner had little reason to celebrate in the first half of the season

The Daily Mail newspaper even described the 27-year-old as a “dud” on Wednesday. “The German striker was immature and distant at Chelsea FC,” criticized the paper, but at the same time speculated: “If the knot (with Werner) breaks, then Spurs may have done one of the deals of January.” The “Telegraph” speculated, Spurs’ offensive style of play under coach Ange Postecoglou could benefit Werner.

In Leipzig, Werner was only a reservist

Werner is on loan to the Londoners until the end of the season, where he will initially represent Heung-Min Son, who is competing with South Korea at the Asian Games. Under their new coach Postecoglou, Tottenham Hotspur has made a successful start to the Premier League season and is currently in fifth place in the table, six points less than league leaders Liverpool.

Werner had a disappointing first half of the season in Leipzig and was mostly on the bench in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League. In total he was only used in twelve games and scored two goals. Most of the time the striker, who also lost his place in the national team, was only substituted on.
