Mirra Andreeva’s Phenomenal Comeback: A Teenage Sensation at the Australian Open

The 16-year-old Russian Mirra Andreeva came back from 1-5 down in the final set, as well as a match point on serve, to overcome the round of 16 of the Australian Open for the first time in her career, after beating the Frenchwoman Diane Parry 1-6, 6-1 and 7-6(5).

Andreeva became the youngest tennis player to beat a top-10 player in the previous round with her victory over the Tunisian Ons Jabeus (6), after that triumph of the American Coco Gauff over the Japanese Naomi Osaka in Melbourne Park in 2020.

The audience on court 3 rose to give a loud ovation to a tennis player who reached a third round at Roland Garros and a round of 16 at Wimbledon at just 15 years old last season.

Although her statistics were lower than those of the French tennis playerwith eight less winners and two more unforced errors, the Czech won 2-0 in the face-to-face match she maintains with Parry, after also winning the clash they had in the last edition of Roland Garros.

Her next rival will be known after the conclusion of the clash between the Australian qualifier Storm Hunter and the also Czech Barbora Krejcikova (9), a match that will close the day at the Rod Laver Arena.
