Miriam Ederar: Rising Star in Karate

CHIEVE – The books? Enough to ensure promotion to the next class each year. Sports practice? The more the merrier, like L’Amico è, by Dario Baldan Bembo. Miriam Ederar, a 17-year-old fourth-year student at the sports high school of the Pacioli institute in Crema, has clear ideas and determination to spare. His days are divided between study and karate, more of the latter than the former in reality. But that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have ambitions for his future work: «I want to study law and become a lawyer. But in the meantime, I would like to join the sports group of a state body, such as the army, financial police or police. That way I would get a paycheck just for being an athlete.”

And an athlete, Miriam is all-round. Three days ago he received the call from the Fijlkam national karate team to represent Italy in the women’s kata at the next Cadet, Junior and Under 21 European Championships, which will be held from 9 to 11 February in Tbilisi, Georgia. For the Pacioli student, Italian mother and Moroccan father, this is the second call-up to the blue team. «This time I will participate in the individual competitions. On the previous occasion, last year, I was also called for the European Championships, held in Cyprus, and I won the team bronze medal.”

Miriam’s story with karate is that of love at first sight, as she herself says: «I was seven years old and I practiced swimming and artistic gymnastics. My twin brother Karim wanted to try karate and when my mother accompanied him to the Team Pironti gym in Casaletto Ceredano I was there too. I immediately felt attracted to this sport and I haven’t stopped since.” Since then, Miriam’s career has been in continuous growth.

«From the age of 11 I began competitive activity. At that point I understood that I needed more specific preparation and for a year I moved to a gym in Soresina and then to the Master Rapid company in Piancamuno, in Valle Camonica.. For five years I went back and forth, then, in order not to leave out school, I moved to the Judo Karate club in Milan, which now provides a technician to train me in Lodi. This way I can follow the lessons, at least when I’m not around for competitions or national team gatherings.” If Miriam manages to combine high level sport with study it is also thanks to her teachers.

«They help me and come to my aid, making me plan questions and checks. I can say that I am good at almost all subjects. Knock on wood, so far I have managed to reconcile the two activities». And if she does well on the benches, on her tatami the girl becomes irresistible. The confirmation is the results you have obtained so far. «In May 2022 – explains Miriam – I became Italian champion in the Junior category. Then I won several Open tournaments in Italy and Croatia. Last year in February I won the bronze medal in the Youth World Cup held in the United Arab Emirates. Then there was the first call-up to the national team, as I already said, and the team bronze. In September, in Mexico, I achieved fifth place in the singles, then I placed third at the Italian Under 21 Championships in Taranto and second in the Junior tricolors, my category, in Ostia.”

But that is not all. «Most recently, I won an Open in Eboli, then placed second in another World Cup event in Jesolo». The next events will be in February practically at the same time: «The European event in Georgia with the singles competitions and the report card for the first quarter».
