Mexican arbitration is evolving, it is opening.
The most important of its innovations for the Clausura 2024, a tournament that starts tomorrow, will be that the whistlers—after each play reviewed by the VAR—will announce their decisions to the public through a microphone. They will explain why the marking occurred. As happens in the NFL.
This novelty could occur as early as Friday, with the Querétaro-Toluca and Mazatlán FC-Atlético de San Luis matches.
After discussing with the video arbitration judges and making a decision, the centre-back will make the call and immediately turn on the microphone he brings, which will be connected to the local sound of the building and the television broadcast. He will report and explain what happened.
The referees—in the preseason they carry out at the FMF facilities in Toluca—have already been practicing it.
And there’s more… As announced, at the end of each day the audios of the conversations between the central referees and those certified for video refereeing will be released. What will be heard will be the keys that are used, something that managers and teams have had access to for a long time, but now it will be public, as is done in South American soccer.
The referees have the task of making the game agile, World Cup style, without calling “fouls.” The objective is to give it fluidity, although the time replacement will remain the same—or stricter—as in the last tournament.
And what is going to happen with the arbitration independence that was announced at the last Owners’ Assembly? For the moment, nothing.
There is no start date yet, but – when it happens – the whistlers will create a kind of association, where designations, awards, punishments will be decided, without anyone from the FMF being present. Obviously, there will be a link with the governing body: The president of the Commission, Armando Archundia, who is in charge of the entire administrative part.
