Merlins Crailsheim Suffer Home Defeat to Basketball Löwen Braunschweig

At the end of the first half of the Basketball Bundesliga, the Merlins Cralsheim welcomed the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig in the Arena Hohenlohe on the 17th matchday of the German Beletage. In front of 2,395 spectators, the Merlins had a good first half on both sides of the floor, in which they were in the lead from the fifth minute of the game. While the Braunschweig guests continuously improved in the second half, the Merlins hardly made any difference compared to the first 20 minutes, so that a 70:80 home defeat for the Hohenlohe team was on the scoreboard.

James Murray-Boyles had to miss the game due to illness, but Prince Oduro was back in the Merlins’ squad under head coach Jussi Laakso compared to the game in Ludwigsburg. Moe Stuckey played his 413th game in the BBL against Braunschweig and drew level with Heiko Schaffartzik in 17th place.

“We did well in the first half and were able to build an eleven-point lead. As the game progressed, Braunschweig became more physical and got a lot of offensive rebounds. In the second half we were simply too slow and too static. We didn’t move the ball effectively enough, which allowed Braunschweig to create some turnovers, which they converted into points. The second half showed that we didn’t deserve to win today. We have to put this defeat behind us and not lose sight of our goal of staying in the league.”

The oldie should lead the team in the eternally young duel

A concentrated and united team reaction to last weekend’s Ludwigsburg game in the first half ended with an eleven-point lead for the Merlins (47:36, 20..). With a 100 percent three-point rate, Léo Westermann stood out as the top scorer in the first half.

One was running hot

The second half began for the home team in the Arena Hohenlohe with an “and-one” from Moe Stuckey. Jilson Bango and Ferdinand Zylka added more points for the guests and narrowed the gap to Crailsheim (51:45, 23). The hot Westermann countered the Lions’ offensive momentum with his fourth successful three-point game, Keandre Cook followed suit from the free throw line. The Braunschweig team then used the Merlins’ increasing number of missed opportunities to their advantage and reduced the score to three points – Crailsheim took a break. The hosts came out of this with energy in Tremmell Darden, the Lions kept up the pace (59:57, 28). Amar Sylla initially brought the game level after Moe Stuckey’s foul, and with just under a minute left in the third quarter the guests took the lead (59:61, 30th).

Von Downtown

The first moments of the last ten minutes belonged to Braunschweig, who made two successful free throws – TJ Crockett Jr. followed suit from close range. Downtown’s Keandre Cook shook the arena, and after an offensive foul by the guests, Moe Stuckey narrowed the gap to one point. As a result, the Lions continued to play with concentration. A 64:73 from the Wizards’ perspective forced Jussi Laaks into the next timeout – three minutes remained. Moe Stuckey from the middle distance and Prince Oduro with the dunk briefly gave the fans in the bullring hope again (68:76, 38th min.).

A total of 23 points from Merlins Crailsheim in the second round were not enough to bring the Basketball Lions Braunschweig to their knees. Too little intensity in the second half ultimately resulted in a 70:80 home defeat for the Merlins. Léo Westermann was the top scorer for the magicians with 14 points.

After the home game against Braunschweig next Sunday, the Merlins are challenged away: In the Bavarian capital, the magicians will be playing at FC Bayern Basketball – jump ball in Munich’s “BMW Park” is on January 28th at 3:30 p.m.

Dyn will broadcast the encounter at the start of the second half of the season live from 3:15 p.m. cdud
