Maxi Araujo Suffers Season-Ending ACL Injury: Atenas’ Replacement Plan

Máximo Araujo suffered a “practically complete rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament” in his left knee on December 18, in the game that Atenas lost as a visitor against Barrio Parque in the Argentine Basketball League. It was the last meeting of the year for the two people from Córdoba and also the last for the 21-year-old shooting guard, who will miss the rest of the season.

This Wednesday, after noon, Maxi Araujo will undergo surgery for the severe injury. Leading the intervention will be the renowned surgeon Facundo Segura.

The player born on September 13, 2002 in San Francisco completed all the studies prior to the operation this Wednesday. Recovery will take about six months. “With peace of mind. Let’s get back with everything,” Araujo told Mundo D in the days before Christmas when the diagnosis of the injury was confirmed.

Araujo played 13 of Atenas’ 14 games in the Argentine League this season with an average of 6.3 points, scoring 45 percent in free throws (5/11), 68% in doubles (30/44) and 22% in triples (6/27), plus 1.3 rebounds in 14.5 minutes.

Despite being 21 years old, he played four seasons in the National League. He debuted on September 25, 2019 against Boca.

Beyond being protected by the regulations, Atenas will not have a replacement for Araujo, who occupies one of the U23 spots in the squad. To fill the position of the 1.84 meter shooting guard, coach Gustavo Peirone will rely on three players from the quarry. The first is Matías Stanic (he turned 18 in December), plus Erick Mecías (20 years old) and Mirko Kozar (18). Stanic, with experience in the last National League, played 11 games this season in the Argentine League with an average of two points in 8.3 minutes; The Ecuadorian Mecías appeared in 11 games (1.6 minutes and 0.6 points) and Kozar did so in 7 games (1.1 minutes and one goal).
