Matthijs de Ligt’s Injury Casts Doubt on European Championship Participation

Matthijs de Ligt cannot take action for the time being. The defender of Bayern Munich and the Dutch national team suffered an injury to the capsule of his left knee during his club’s training camp in Faro.

Further investigation revealed the severity of the injury. De Ligt was already missing from the training field on Tuesday, but the club did not give a reason for his absence that day. The news means a new blow for the 24-year-old Dutchman, who has left the training field for the time being the record champion will have to avoid.

Will Matthijs de Ligt go to the European Championship?

De Ligt is having a disappointing season due to injuries. He had to miss no fewer than eleven Bayern matches in all competitions, partly due to a knee injury. The Dutchman did not come off the bench in two matches and in the other twelve matches he only played 525 minutes: almost 44 minutes per match. Trainer Thomas Tuchel usually chooses Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae in the center of defense.

De Ligt, 43 first-team internationals, has had a mediocre calendar year as a Dutch international. The defender lost his starting place and, partly due to injuries, only played three of the ten international matches in 2023. He was in the starting line-up in the European Championship qualifiers with Gibraltar (3-0) and Ireland (1-2) and played five minutes in the 3-0 win over Greece in the same European Championship qualifying campaign in Germany.

De Ligt’s injury may therefore also be bad news for national coach Ronald Koeman. In preparation for the European Championship in Germany, the Dutch team will play friendly matches against Scotland (March 22) and Germany (March 26) in March.
