Mario Lobo Zagallo dies at 92, Brazilian soccer legend and the greatest champion in World Cup history

Zagallo, nicknamed “Old Wolf”, is an idol for generations, a world eminence and one of the most important coaches and players in the history of Brazilian football.

Mario Jorge Lobo Zagalloa former Brazilian footballer and former coach as well as a four-time world champion with Brazil as a player, coach and coordinator of the national team, has died at the age of 92, his advisor reported this Saturday.

“With great sadness we announce the death of our eternal four-time world champion Mario Jorge Lobo Zagallo,” can be read in a message published on the former player’s social networks in a note, which does not report the causes of death.

Last year his state of health was deteriorated by a urinary infection that forced him to be hospitalized about three weeks. In 2022 he was also hospitalized for a respiratory infection.

Zagallo, nicknamed “Old Wolf”, he is an idol for generationsa world eminence and one of the most important coaches and players in the history of Brazilian football.

He is the only one to have four world titles in his record: two as a player (Sweden 1958 and Chile 1962), another as a coach (Mexico 1970) and the last as coordinator of the Canarinha (United States 1994).

Born on August 9, 1931 in the state of Alagoas, he acted as a forward during his time as a player, in which defended Flamengo and Botafogotwo of the great clubs in Brazil.

“A devoted father, a loving grandfather, a loving father-in-law, a faithful friend, a victorious professional and a great human being. A giant idol. A patriot who leaves us a legacy of great achievements,” the obituary states.

With the brazilian team conquered the World Cups in Sweden 1958 and Chile 1962 along with Edson Arantes do Nascimento ‘Pel’, who died at the age of 82 on December 29, 2022, a victim of colon cancer.

Of as a coach he won the 1970 Mexico titlewith Pel still in the field, and as technical coordinator of the United States 1994being the only one to have won four world titles in the history of football.

In addition, only he reached five World Cup finals in his seven participations.

He barely lost against the hosts in the 1998 World Cup final in France, the year in which he served as coach of a team with figures such as Ronaldo, Bebeto, Rivaldo, Dunga, Roberto Carlos, Caf and Taffarel, among others.
