In a match where they were better in opportunities generated, Marathón had to work hard to draw against Olimpia (1-1) in the final stretch of the match for date 2 of Clausura 2023.
Marathón’s coach, Hernán ‘La Tota’ Medina, highlighted that the team could have scored much before the goal scored by Uruguayan debutant Maximiliano Pérez (89′), taking into account the chances he had.

It was a great result. We worked at times and at other times there were occasional shocks that a tough team like Olimpia can obviously cause. With our idiosyncrasy, we were able to play our game and ended up tying a match that even seemed unfair, but hey, football has these things.

When we tried to play, we faced the goal, like a block by Menjívar in the first half, we had enough chances to not lose on the scoreboard. The idea is that we have this game identity on any court. We left home and we did it in a good way. All of this helped us to try and strengthen ourselves mentally since we were losing at halftime and in the second half Olimpia had few chances.

What is your opinion of Armando Castro’s refereeing?
I think he did a good job. I don’t think they had any interference. I didn’t see the penalty, I asked Selvin (Brown) if he went inside the area. What I claimed was the time he added. The refereeing was correct. If the referees went unnoticed in these matches it is because they did it well.
How important is it for a forward like Maxi Pérez to score in his first game?
For forwards who need to feed off the goal, it is very important. We’ve only been working with him for a week, he needs more time, especially on the court. The dispute over who will be the starting and substitute forward, we are all for the same thing, so I am very happy with him. He is an incentive to continue working. Everyone is there to be taken into account and it is a motivation that can help us in the tournament.
