Luka Doncic’s Legacy Needs an NBA Championship to Cement His Place as Best European Player

At this point we are not going to discover Luka Doncic as a basketball player. The Slovenian is the soul of the Dallas Mavericks and one of the best in the NBA; so much so that he is currently in the race for the MVP of the 2023-24 campaign. However, something is still missing.

That’s exactly what Tony Parker, legend of the San Antonio Spurs and French basketball, talks about when asked if Doncic is in the discussion about the best European player of all time. The Frenchman does not doubt the talent of the Mavs star, but he does emphasize a detail that he understands takes him out of the fight with other great players from the old continent.

«In my opinion, for a player to be part of the debate about the best European player of all time, he needs to win a championship. That’s just my personal opinion. I love the discussion about the best. I always have that conversation with my brother and my friends. In my opinion, if you don’t know what it takes to win a championship, you shouldn’t be part of the discussion about the greatest of all time,” says Parker in statements reported by Eurohoops.

Parker may not be wrong. Doncic’s numbers and basketball are at the top, but the next step must be to truly be in the fight to be NBA champion, and so far his ceiling has been the 2022 Western Conference finals. We’re talking about the NBA, obviously, since in 2017 he was proclaimed Eurobasket champion when he was only 18 years old.
