LSU to Overhaul Defensive Staff for 2024 Season

LSU will have an overhauled defensive staff in 2024. Defensive coordinator Matt House, defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey, safeties coach Kerry Cooks and cornerbacks coach Robert Steeples will not return to the program, Coach Brian Kelly announced Wednesday

The Tigers finished 81st nationally in scoring defense, allowing 28 points per game, down from 33rd in 2022. The defense also finished 92nd in yards per rush allowed, 106th in yards per pass allowed and 106th in takeaways.

“I want to thank each of these coaches for their work on behalf of our football program and our institution during their time here,” Kelly said in a statement. “Decisions like these are always difficult, and we do not make them lightly, but they are made with the best interests of our program and our student-athletes in mind.

“Moving forward, we will continue working to build a championship-caliber coaching staff in support of our mission to graduate champions.”

At the moment, only defensive line coach John Jancek and outside linebackers/special teams coach Bob Diaco are set to return to the defensive staff.

Kelly is 20-7 in two years as LSU’s head coach, including a 10-3 record this year after a Reliaquest Bowl win against Wisconsin on Monday. The Tigers are expected to finish ranked in the top 15.

But LSU’s defense allowed 45 points to Florida State, 55 points to Ole Miss, 39 points to Missouri and 42 points to Alabama, losing three of those four key games. The team was carried all season by quarterback Jayden Daniels, who won the Heisman Trophy as the nation’s most outstanding player.
